Pamela Dodds

Artist member since 2020
Pro
Toronto, Ontario

Pamela Dodds’ artwork in printmaking, painting and drawing is exhibited regularly in Canada, the USA and Europe. In suites of linocut prints in graphic black-and-white, Dodds employs the language of the gesture of the human form in imagery of paired female and gender ambiguous figures, to explore the ebb and flow of intimate relationships. In Memory’s Witness, a suite of 6 woodcut prints, in which the symmetrical filigree patterns of woodgrain evoke atmosphere and sound, she addresses the cyclical nature and generational trauma of war, as witnessed by a mythic and timeless pair of women, girls, crones. Also, in small paintings and drawings, Dodds explores the resonance and embedded history within ordinary objects and the natural world. "Printmaker Pamela Dodds employs a bold linearity...to create a world of deeply human and healing interaction..." stated arts writer R.M. Vaughan in The Globe and Mail. Collectors include Purdue University, Illinois, Capital One Bank, Ontario, Boston Public Library, Massachusetts and Cleveland Museum of Art, Ohio. Supporters include the Toronto Arts Council, Ontario Arts Council, Canada Council for the Arts, and Barbara Deming Fund for feminist art. She lives and works in Toronto.

Q+A

Why is it important for people to have art in their home or life?

Art is a unique personal experience for each individual person. No two people see a work of art quite the same way. Artwork that we love reflects back to us something meaningful and affirming and can bring pleasure and fulfillment to daily life.

When did you start making art, and why?

For me, drawing and painting as a child allowed me to quietly contemplate and examine the world around me. It was, and continues to be, a place of solace, love, reflection and communication..

How long have you been creating art?

I am a life-long full time artist.

What do you listen to when you work?

I like to follow international news. Listening to news analysis podcasts and audio books seems to use a different part of my brain while I am drawing, painting and printing.

Only thing you need when you leave the house

an open heart

When I'm not making art, I'm (a) ...

just busy with the fullness of life!
